STREETS OF JIGJIGA
The streets of Jigjiga is a photo project showcasing the day-to-day activities in the bustling streets of Jigjiga city in the Somali region. Jigjiga was often an isolated city from the rest of the world in the last two decades due to the strict and harsh rule of the previous regime, which had huge censorships on the media. With fewer restrictions on the media today, this photo project looks to showcase the life and the gems of the city.
Jigjiga is in the Ogaden (also referred to as Somali Galbeed) region, which is technically part of Ethiopia despite long-standing local opposition to Ethiopian rule. The 1977 war between Ethiopia and Somalia—known as the Ogaden War—was fought over control of this territory.
